ARE BEAUTY PAGEANTS EXPLOITATIVE?
by Fatty Mae Quisto - Grade 9
Beauty pageants are popular nowadays. They are more focused on judging and ranking the candidates' physical appearance. With that notion, people have raised the issue of it being exploitative.
As a woman, I consider beauty pageants nowadays really exploitative because the people as represented by the judges tend to compare a girl's beauty to another. Girls seem to be judged based on their physical beauty rather than their inner beauty. The losers are exploited as they feel inferior over the others after being judged using a single standard of what beauty means. The women who participate are being exploited because they are being graded based on their physical appearance.
How can the judges know if the crowned candidate is really deserving when they only interact with a short period of time? This question runs in my head every time a winner in a beauty is proclaimed.
Beauty pageants are in some ways exploitative because the society already set standards on beauty means. A lot of girls are being rejected and are criticized because they are not tall, they have plus size body, they do not have clear skin, and they have so many flaws. The inferiorities of others are countless that make them feel as second-rate-women thus bring their confidence down even when they have a good heart and a good attitude that a real beauty queen must have while other girls that are selected are busy putting make up and showing their hour-glass-shaped-body but are not working hard to prove that they have a good heart because the society only see the physical attributes of the girls.
Women should not be judged by their physical attributes but should be judged based on what they can contribute on the society and how they can be productive as women. Empowering women should never be done by exploiting them.
