Teenagers Exposure to Social Media: A Barrier or a Bridge to Depression?
by Carmel Faith Lariosa- Grade 9
Depression is a major mental disorder that negatively affects how you feel the way you think and how you act. This mental disorder can be associated to social media exposure by the means of influencing the risk or the possibility of teenagers developing depression.
The common symptoms of depression are trouble in concentrating, remembering details, fatigue, feeling of guilt, worthlessness, irritability, making decisions, loss of interest on doing things you love, suicidal thoughts, over eating or appetite loss. The clinical symptoms of depression can be caused by the exposure of teenagers to social media. Teenagers are still maturing and at this stage they can be influenced easily.
First, when teenagers see contents such as "suicidal post" or "negative thoughts" their emotions are vulnerable resulting to being curious or overwhelmed. That is why they start committing suicidal attempts out of curiosity and they start thinking about the negative thoughts without seeking for the positive one because of being overwhelmed.
In addition, teenagers experience bullying due to social media exposure. When teenagers post something there are so many hate and destructive opinions that are hard for teenagers to handle. The overwhelming and frustrated feeling of being bullied can lead to depression.
Moreover, teenagers start to question their worth when they do not achieve the so called "social-media- standards" of being beautiful, smart, and admirable. They start comparing themselves to others, and they feel frustrated and insecure that may lead to depression.
Finally, a 2018 Pew Research Center survey of nearly 750 13 to 17-year-olds found that 45% are online almost constantly and 97% use a social media platform, such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat. This record has an impact to teenagers unhealthy sleep and routines that could trigger and develop depression.
