SOCIAL MEDIA: A SLANDER TO MENTAL HEALTH

The moment the word “SOCIAL MEDIA” is brought up a lot of ideas will come to people’s mind. People would eventually label social media as good way of communicating. Many of us rely on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, and Instagram to find and connect with each other. While each has it’s benefits, it is important to remember that social media can never be a replacement for real-world human connection. Some claim that reducing social media usage can actually make you feel less lonely and isolated and improve your overall wellbeing. In addition, heavy social media use could be masking other underlying problems such as stress, depression,or boredom. If you spend more time on social media when you’re feeling down, lonely, or bored, you may be using it as a way to distract yourself from unpleasant feelings or self-soothe your moods. Ironically for a technology that’s designed to bring people closer together, spending too much time engaging with social media can actually make one feel more insecure, distracted, lonely, and isolated—and exacerbate mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

Social media can exacerbate mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Ben Grade 10 student who addicted to mobile legends he no longer eats, he doesn’t have time to rest and his parents are in problems because of his addiction. He also read a negative social media message. Because the article about him was false, he didn’t like what he read and become despondent as a result. If you use social media excessively, it can lead to anxiety and depression. You might even see a false post about you on social media, will they alter your photo and post it on social media where you will receive backlash for having a crude photo even though it is not actually you. If so, you will feel depressed and consider committing suicide because you are sick of hearing other people’s stories about you.

Another impact of heavy social media use. Based on my own experience I get easily distracted over a simple notification, and as I check the notification, I lose track of time and I totally forget about what I supposed to do because I got distracted by it. Social media can be detrimental if used excessively. It will distract you while you are in class which will drive you insane. You can become addicted to social media if you use it excessively. Social media is bad you can’t switch off your phone since it’s only on social media and if you use it too much, it’s already been harmed by social media

Social media is a bad influence to everyone who use it in a bad way. It has a lot of disadvantages in our being as it can cause mental health issues such as; loneliness, anxiety, depression, and more to mention. Hence, it is indeed a must to distance ourselves with heavy social media use as it can affect our mental health. We, social media users should stop scrolling through our Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and many more. To feel less insecure, distracted, lonely and isolated, we should start doing actions towards change as early as now before it’s too late.
